A meeting slump, everyone knows it: your thoughts that wander to sunny places, the groceries for tonight or the appointment with the dentist that you need to make. And then the moment comes when you realize that you are in an important meeting and the story no longer follows.

How do you ensure that your attention returns to the subject of the meeting, without your colleagues and the chairman noticing that you have lost your attention? This blog describes the do's and don'ts to survive a meeting dip.

Don'ts

In most cases you will not want to show that you have lost the thread of the conversation. You are often so actively involved in this that you immediately fall through the basket. You sit up straight or slightly forward, nod actively, smile and look closely at the chairman or your colleagues. The contrast to your previous attitude is so great that you attract everyone's attention.

DOS

Do sit upright, of course, as this ensures better concentration. Take a glass of water, look at the chairman but don't be too fanatical and write important words in your notebook. The most important thing is to focus on the story of the chairman or your colleagues and not whether someone noticed that you were absent for a while.

Are there any questions?

The well-known round of questions often follows the meeting. When the chairman finishes the story and you fervently hope that you will not be asked a question, it is best to look expectantly at one of your colleagues. In this way you draw the attention of the chairman to someone else.

Still, it is not smart to be completely silent during the question round. Therefore, occasionally respond to colleagues by summarizing the answer. When questions are asked about the topic you missed, ask if it can be explained further.

This is how I survive my meeting slump!

Fortunately, everyone sometimes suffers from the meeting dip and you are not the only one who hopes that your dip has gone unnoticed. With all the do's and don'ts to survive a meeting dip in your pocket, you will be able to pick up the next meeting quickly and unobtrusively!
